I’m excited to kick-off Family History Month with a trip down South to capture a family’s story in a Family History Video to show at their upcoming reunion. The weather has cooled in Chicago so the warmth of the Alabama sun is definitely welcome. The thought of meeting a new family and helping to capture and preserve their story fills me with anticipation once again.
The time leading up to such trips can be frenzied. My video camera? Check. My mics and lavelier? Check. My equipment bag? Check. My interview questions? Check. My notepad and computer? Check. I am not a typical traveler on these working journeys; I have my carry-ons and the totes of tools for my trade. But the load is always worth it. Eventually, I will land at my destination and greet new people whom I will almost know like books when I leave.
As a Legacy Video Producer, I am both a filmmaker and also a true intercessor to families who wish to celebrate a parent, grandparent or their ancestry in general. In every case, my goal is to create a unique sense of each and every family in a Documentary they can pass on for generations to come.
While families may seem somewhat similar and predictable, it is the originating history and particular narrative threads that make each unique. It is the tales that give a crinkle to their eyes or irrepressible mirth that I am there to catch. Such moments usually encapsulate the stories that no one else has, or the true character of individuals, or the history to remember later.
Getting ready to travel is a reminder that I chose a job that will never fade or grow stale: as long as there are people, there will be families. As long as there are families, there will be history. We do not need video cameras to look around at the faces of those who love us, but they sure are nice to have for the future! I can’t wait to discover the truest treasures of a family in this latest chronicle, just in time for Family History Month.
