I recently came across a photo of my great grandmother as I was cleaning out an old box. She was standing next to a flower bush wearing a white polka dot dress. I vaguely remember her…her voice, her laughter, her smile, her personality.
I must have been about 10 when she passed away.
Looking at the photo – and after doing a bit of math – I realized she was born in 1890.
That means she lived during the time of WWI, Women’s Suffrage, Prohibition, Al Capone, the roaring 20’s, Babe Ruth, the Titanic, the Great Depression, the Polio Epidemic, WWII, the atomic bomb, Civil rights, the first man on the moon and on and on. She experienced the advent of automobile, radio, phonograph, the telephone, talking movies, the airplane, electric refrigerator, air-conditioning, television, and so on.
She died the year Star Wars came out.
It’s a shame she never left a journal or recorded any of her memories. Not only would I have loved to have learned more about her life but her stories would have personalized history in a way no school text book ever could. Through her descriptions, she could have also given life to other members of our family tree who have long since past – Like her parents, grandparents and, quite possibly, even her great grandparents.
Remembering what I have experienced in my lifetime – like the advent of the personal computer, internet, cell phones, kindle, digital cameras, self driving cars, credit cards, cash station cards, personal drones, to name a few – makes me realize I too am a witness to history in the making.
I wonder what my great grandchildren will think when, as adults, they find an old photo of me.
